William Preston was one of Kentucky's leading citizens of the Antebellum era and was a prominent member of the Confederate military and government. He was educated at Yale and Harvard and served in the Mexican War before becoming a member of Congress. During the Civil War, Preston rose to the rank of major-general and was the Confederate minister to Mexico.
