Is He Dead? is a previously unknown play by Mark Twain published for the first time ever in this book, edited by Shelley Fisher Fishkin. It is the story of a troupe of starving artists who stage the death of a friend to increase the value of his paintings. In the Forward and Afterword, Fishkin contextualizes the comedy by describing Twain's views on drama, his life in late 19th-century Vienna where he wrote it, and the play's subject, painter Jean-Fran?ois Millet.
